Creative Teaching Press – Current Events

Recently, I read an article on monuments in the USA and how Americans have become engrossed in monument building. I had my students design monuments that would be good on our school’s campus. They drew pictures of their monuments and then wrote dedications to the school. They used reading skills to read the article and writing skills to create dedication.

I also have my students write a weekly journal. In a recent editorial in a newspaper, the debate was about starting the school day later. This couldn’t have appeared in the paper at a better time because we were discussing study skills and learning styles. I had the kids write in their journals their opinions on starting school later.

Another uncanny link was the science section article about the peregrine falcon. We had just done a unit on animal survival. In terms of tying a newspaper into my math class, about three weeks ago, there was an article on the median income in the USA. The article lent itself to teach the students all about median and what it means. The children were amazed at the poverty level in the USA.

All About Reading – Making Choices

Anything in the news that involves choices – what you buy, what you eat, even going to the movies – is about making choices. Economics is really about people making choices – not merely about making money. The definition of economics is the “science of choice.”

Most importantly, I want my students to know that when you make a choice, you give up something else. For example, when you purchase something, you have to give up money or another product or activity because of your choice.

I like USA TODAY’s features on lifestyles and food in the newspaper’s LIFE section, and the entire SPORTS section because they highlight stories involving choices that children are interested in. The stories on food involve making several choices to determine how much it costs to create a meal.

The lifestyle material is effective because we can talk about, for example, which movies they like. We read the reviews and compare them to other opinions, or write our own reviews. We also discuss why kids and adults like different movies.

Stop Comparing Yourself – Win Your Battles!

I am going to make this as plain and clear as possible… Stop comparing your own unique situation to those around you.

I am saddened by how the students blogging community has dramatically changed since I first started writing years ago, and I am just as guilty as the next guy about falling into the “comparison trap.”

Back in the day, we all had our eyes on our own prizes, we all just wanted a little piece of the internet to document our personal journeys. We could get all set in our own ways to write our stories, express our love for whatever physical activity, or get further educated by taking online math tests if it would be some educational necessity it was that moved us.

I wrote with passion, I didn’t care who read it, I made some awesome friends along the way, and I had no problem with my 10 hits a day.  I was blogging for the sheer joy of having a place to talk about myself all the time.

Teacher Shortage – Schools are looking for teachers outside U.S. borders

Iris Moran, principal of Oak Knoll Elementary was desperate to fill her school’s vacant teacher slots. So three year ago, she signed up for a program that aims to bring teachers from abroad to American schools.

The intent of the Visiting International Faculty (VIF) program is cultural exchange, but Moran says her initial purpose ”was almost just to help the situation” at her East Point, Ga., school — to replace teachers lost to retirement or maternity leave.

Only now does she appreciate how enriching it is to have teachers from such countries as Chile, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Jamaica, and Australia, despite the fact that our President wants to close our borders to foreigners.

Other schools have taken similar routes to help fill a looming teacher shortage that experts say will require 2.2 million teachers over the next decade. The problem is compounded by the dearth of teachers in math and science — the two subjects in which U.S. students are the weakest when compared with peers in other countries.

And The Point Of Me Being Here Is…?

Just got back home after going for a meeting with the chief executive of the academy that I was hoping to gain work experience at, and I can’t help feeling slightly deflated. First impressions are key for me, and often I struggle to change them once they’re in my head.

You have to do something spectacularly amazing if I have you down as a bit of an idiot from our first meeting. On arriving at the academy I asked for the chief exec. and was told, “Go up to the first floor, and you’ll see her office.”

Bearing in mind this is a large building with several doors going off each wall, I was quite pissed off. Also bear in mind that there were girls in leggings and tap shoes parading around the corridors like the kids from Fame, who looked at me like I was a piece of shit on their shoes.

So I walk up the stairs, and see an open office door and pop my head round – a lady on the phone, not even glancing in my direction. Turns out I wasn’t even at the right office and the chief exec. was next door.

A Post-Job Interview Thank You Letter – So Important

Once you’ve completed your academic education, it’s time to find your dream job. The interview is over. As you reflect on how well you think it went, keep in mind the interviewer probably has quite a few people he or she is talking to. It may be weeks before the interview process is winding down.

You did your best to enthrall and impress the interviewer but if you were among the first interview, how can you be sure your face, name, and credentials will stay in the forefront of his memory? The answer is an amazing thank you letter. In this day and age when letter writing is a lost skill, having that skill can mean the difference between who gets the job in the end.

When to Send an Interview Thank You Letter

Time is of the essence. Send the letter within 24 hours of your interview. This accomplishes three things. First doing it quickly means you won’t set the task aside and then forget about it. Second, it will take a few days to arrive. If the interview process is moving swiftly, waiting any longer to remind the interviewer of what a great catch you are could be too late. Third, it shows the interviewer just how serious and dedicated you are about landing this job. It gives him pause to think about you again.
